This classic sweater has a story like no other collaboration. Two worlds and two sweaters coming together.
Jamieson's of Shetland x Kota Gushiken

Kota explains "I was introduced to a knit factory by the same person who had previously introduced me to Jamieson’s. It’s a knit factory, but they can also do needle-punch, and they showed me their machines and all sorts of knitted fabrics.

One of the needle punched knitted materials they showed me had a pattern that immediately reminded me of a needle-punch piece made by Shaun Samson, who was a MA graduate student at the same university when I was in my first year on the foundation course. I hadn’ t thought about that work in a long time, but seeing this material brought it back to me instantly.

So when I started thinking about this new collaboration with Jamieson’s, that needle-punch idea came back to me, and a really interesting garment began to form in my head. It was still very much at the testing stage, but I had a chance to meet Peter, the owner of Jamieson’s, and his son Garry. When I showed them the trial swatch, they found it really exciting, which made me very happy.

This is a piece that came together because people in many different positions all engaged with it passionately truly a special garment."

Kota Gushiken

Kota Gushiken is a Tokyo knitwear designer known for clothes that are weird, wearable and made with real skill.

After his last showroom wrapped, he needed to get out of Tokyo. He couldn’t choose between Miyako Island and Bali, picked Bali for no real reason, and booked a flight for the next night. There, he met someone who told him, “flow your mind, but don’t follow your mind.” Back in Japan, his acupuncturist suggested they’d been talking about mui: being natural, without intention.

AW26 is Gushiken’s attempt at that. Rather than forcing a concept, he followed whatever turned up: yarns he happened across, colours that popped into his head, the people he met along the way.
