Our Approach

At Grays, we believe that the things we weave, weave us together with the places we love, the people who live there, and the materials that come from the land itself. So we’ve created a label and local shop around that guiding belief. We call it “the unbroken thread.”

Following it has led us to our devotion to natural fibres, and the material that still acts as our muse: Ontario Wool. Our local supply chain allows us to understand and impact each and every step of the process; stretching back from the sewers, to the dyers, to the weavers, to the small farms and unique landscapes and hardy sheep the wool is sourced from.

If it grows here, we believe it’s worth using.

The wool we use is shaped by the same climate and conditions that shape us. And that matters to us, both philosophically and practically. Though often overlooked, Ontario produces high-quality wool that reflects the dynamic and resilient region around us. It’s natural, renewable, biodegradable, and profoundly beautiful. The more we work with it, the more we’re excited by its character and capacity.

We are rooted in place

For Grays, each garment is a reflection of a very distinct place: Ontario. Within just a few hours of our workshop in Toronto, you’ll find the farmers, mills, dyers, and weavers whose work makes ours possible. This intimacy makes responsible sourcing more than an abstract commitment, but an act of community-building and investment in the local economy. We’re honoured to work with partners like Topsy Farms, Black Sheep Farm, Wave Fibre Mill, ML Development, Sew Rite Studio, Upper Canada Weaving, and Iron Cauldron to bring Grays garments to life.

Designed, cut, and sewn in Toronto

Each and every Grays garment comes together steps from our shop on Dundas St in west-end Toronto. Made by hand, in limited batches, and often made-to-order. We design our pieces to be heirlooms, passed from our hands to yours, and then down through the generations. This focus on quality over quantity allows us to avoid overproduction and excess inventory, threading responsibility through the entire garment life cycle.

Friends of Grays

The same principles that guide our brand, inform how we curate our store. Since our founding, we’ve met kindred spirits who are building brands that reflect the same transparency, responsibility and creativity we strive for. Though their places of origin are different, their intended impact is the same. So when you walk through our Toronto shop, you’ll find Grays garments shoulder-to-shoulder with stunning, small-batch work from around the world. Each with a story worth hearing and vision worth supporting.

The Future

Today, the Canadian textile industry remains small, and working at this scale comes with real costs and limitations. But we believe that with continued investment in local farmers, mills, and makers, this ecosystem can grow stronger over time. Looking forward, we will continue to invest in the people, processes, and places we call home, growing our collections and expanding our vision while still maintaining an unbroken thread between the garments we create and their origins all around us. Processes. People. Places. In unison.

"We started Grays after discovering the possibilities of Ontario wool and realizing how disconnected we’d become from the things we wear every day. Learning that this work still exists close to home—through farmers, mills, and craftspeople in our own community—changed how we think about clothing. By working locally, we hope to help show what’s possible here."
